Will it be third time's the charm for Marvel's most charming mutant? Today at the C2E2 convention in Chicago, Marvel Comics announced that Gambit will get another crack at an ongoing comic book series this August in the hands of writer James Asmus (Generation Hope) and artist Clay Mann (X-Men: Age of X).

The dashing Cajun seems like a natural for his own title given his high potential for swashbuckling adventure, thrilling heists and swoonsome romance, yet his 1999 series lasted only 25 issues and his 2004 series only managed a year, perhaps because both series got caught up in the character's arcane and tangled New Orleans back story.

As Asmus explained at Marvel's "Next Big Thing" panel, according to CBR, "This book focuses on the two most important aspects of Gambit: #1 that he's sexy, and #2 that he's the preeminent bad-ass thief of the Marvel Universe."

Those are two parts of the formula that would make a Gambit series work for me as a fan and it's nice to see a such a direct nod to the character's eye-candy appeal (and the omission of the part of the costume that Asmus called his "head sock"). There's room for at least one male sex symbol in superhero comics, right?
